Rusted Text This tutorial
was created and put on this site on July 17, 2003. For this tutorial
you will need:
Open a new image: Select your text tool. Set your
foreground color to null and your background to gradient with these
settings: Place your text by clicking on your image. For the tutorial I
will be using: Objects > align > Center in canvas. Activate your Object Selector tool. Right click on the text and Create raster selection. Selections > Load/Save selection > Save selection to Alpha channel > Save. In your Layer Palette right click on the vector layer and Convert to raster layer and rename the layer to text. Add a new raster layer and name it dark rust. Effects >
Plugins > Xenofex2 > Stain > these settings: Add a new raster layer and name it medium rust. Effects >
Plugins > Xenofex2 > Stain > these settings: Add a new raster layer and name it light rust. Effects >
Plugins > Xenofex2 > Stain > these settings: Set your foreground color to solid white and your background to solid black. Add a new raster layer and name it light pocks. Select your
Airbrush tool and set at: Using your Airbrush make a quick sweep across the top like you see below.
Selections > Float. Selections > Defloat. Add a new raster layer and name it dark pocks. Toggle your colors by clicking on the small arrow in between the color boxes. Flood fill the
selection with black, be sure your Match mode is set to none or you will
be filling those little spots all day! Selections > select none. Still zoomed in grab your Mover tool and move the black spots 1 pixel down and to the right or left (your preference). Layers > Arrange > Move down. This is how your
Layer Palette should be arranged:
Just a quick Layer
Palette review on where the Opacity slider and the Blend mode drop downs
are located: Activate your light pocks layer. Set the opacity of the layer to 60-75% and the blend mode to Overlay. Activate your dark pocks layer. Set the blend mode to Multiply. Activate the light rust layer. Effects > 3D
effects > Drop Shadow > these settings: Set the blend mode to Hard light or Multiply and the opacity to 75-100%. Activate the medium rust layer. Effects > 3D
Effects > Inner bevel > these settings: Set the blend mode to Luminance (L). Activate your dark rust layer. Set the blend mode to Burn. Activate the dark pocks layer. Selections > Load/Save selection > Load selection from Alpha Channel > Invert image checked > Load. Hit your delete key. Selections none. Go through and play with the blend modes and opacity of the different layers - you get some interesting results. When you are done playing right click on any of the layers and Merge > Merge visible. Now it is ready for a background of your choice. Enjoy!
