Open a new image:
200 x 200 pixels
Transparent
16.7 Million colors

Set your foreground to pattern with these settings:
Your gingham
Angle 0
Scale 100

Flood fill the image with the gingham.

Effects > Texture effects > Texture > these settings:
Granite 01
Size 75%
Smoothness 0
Depth 4
Ambiance 0
Shininess 0
Color white
Angle 315
Intensity 50
Elevation 30

Layers > Load/Save Mask > Load Mask from disk > these settings:
ww-gingedge
Source luminance
Fit to canvas

Layers > Merge > Merge group.

Selections > Select all.

Selections > Float.

Selections > Defloat.

Selections > Modify > contract > 3 > ok.

Selections > Invert.

Effects > Texture effects > Fur > these settings:
Blur 6
Density 13
Length 5
Transparency 0

Selections > Select none.

Your fabric square is now ready for use.

*For another great fabric look... one more step.

Effects > Plugins > Simple > 4 Way Average.
(Reminds me of my great-grandmother's apron fabric - soft from many years of use.)
