Sand Paper Text

Terms of Use

For this tutorial you will need:
Paint Shop Pro 8  ~ download a trial version.
My gradient ~ download here and unzip into your PSP gradients folder.

Open a new image:
500 x 300 pixels
Transparent
Raster background
16.7 Million colors

Select your text tool.

Set foreground to null and background to gradient with these settings:
ww-rust3
angle & repeats 0
linear

Click on your image to set your text.

These text settings I am using are:
Vector
Arial Black
Size 72
Stroke 0
Anti-alias checked
Auto kern checked
Leading -300

Apply your text.

Objects > Align > Center in canvas.

Right click inside the vector bounding box and Create Raster Selection.

Selections > Load/Save selection > Save selection to Alpha > Save.

In the Layer Palette right click on the vector layer and Promote Selection to Layer.

Do this once more so that now you have two promoted layers.

Let's rename some layers to alleviate confusion.

The top layer rename to sand.

The promoted layer just above the vector layer rename to tan fill.

With the tan fill layer active, flood fill the selection with a light tan, I am using #E4CCB6.

Activate the sand layer.

(And yes our selection should still be there.)

Effects > Texture effects > Mosaic Antique > these settings:
Columns & rows 25
Tile diffusion 50
Grout width 10
Grout diffusion 50

In the Layer Palette right click on the sand layer and duplicate.  Rename this duplicated layer black.

Activate the selection tool and click on a piece of sand.  What should happen is the selection will set to only the "sand" and now be floating.

Selections > Defloat.

Flood fill the selection with black.  You may need to zoom in to hit the right spot.
Also be sure that your fill tool is set at Match mode - None.
Otherwise you will be here all day filling in those little selections LOL!

Duplicate the black layer and rename it white.

Flood fill this layer of "sand" with white.

Selections > Select none.

Making sure your white layer is active select your deformation tool.

Hold down your CTRL key then on your key board hit your up arrow once then your left arrow once.

Activate your black layer and click once inside the bounding box.

Hold down your CTRL key then on your key board hit your down arrow once then your right arrow once.

Select your mover tool.

Activate the sand layer.

Layers > Arrange > Bring to top.

Activate the white layer.

Selections > Load/Save selection > Load selection from Alpha > Invert checked > Load.

Edit > Clear.

Activate the black layer.

Edit > Clear.

Selections > Select none.

Now we just need to set some opacity and blend modes.

In the Layer Palette set:
White layer to 60 opacity and Luminance (L)
Black layer to Screen
Tan fill layer to 60 opacity

Right click on any of the layers and Merge Visible.

Now your sand paper text is ready to use.
